It’s a tricky thing, moving in to a coaching position when you know nothing abut the team. Well, I knew a couple of the kids I’d be coaching, but that’s it. Establishing goals is different than an adult team, isn’t it? It seems not. These kids want to win. How does a coach approach that? Turns out, you treat them like athletes. Introduce skills that challenge each player. Lay out expectations and rules of conduct and make sure there are consequences if the expectations are not met or the rules broken. Young athletes are fantastic to work with. They listen. They want to do well. Moreso than adults? I don’t know. It’s been a rewarding experience so far.
